The beauty of a round-pen is it's versatility. From being used simply as a secure area for turn-out to teaching new (and old) riders how to find their seat round-pens have proven an indispensable tool for all horse facilities.

Almost all horses and riders can benefit from round-pen lessons. They provide a controlled, confined area for initial assessment and for establishing mutual respect.

Working within the confines of a small area, especially one without corners to 'hide in', provides an opportunity for bonding that just cannot be replicated under saddle.

Here are a few more Benefits of a Round-Pen Arena:

Evaluate temperament, gaits, level of trust, soundness, emotional behavior, etc. Round-pens offer trainers the ability to assess a horse as he moves freely through his gaits. Rather than simply lunging on a line or with side-reins where the trainer has more "control", the horse is able to move without restraint allowing a full evaluation of movement. This can help identify things such as lameness, inflexibility on one side or another, fear or freshness as well as a myriad of other physical and behavioral issues. Conversely, free lunging in a round-pen can also showcase a horse's natural movement without hindrance which is especially useful when judging a horse's natural capabilities.

Relaxation. Free lunging in a round-pen provides an opportunity for the horse, and rider, to relax prior to riding. Just like a marathon runner needs to take some time to warm up and get the kinks out so does your horse. Again, allowing free movement means he can work through his gaits unhindered as his muscles warm up and relax. The rider also has a moment to relax as she takes time to connect verbally and through body language with her mount.

Foster a strong bond. Working within the confines of a small area, especially one without corners to 'hide in', provides an opportunity for bonding that just cannot be replicated under saddle. When a horse is allowed to move freely while still in a controlled environment he will be better able to see you as part of the herd. Working on ground manners, grooming, saddling and creating an air of partnership will improve as your bond strengthens, all within a safe space.

As you can see, the benefits of a round-pen arena can have a profound impact on your horsemanship---from riding and showing to the quality of horse ownership.
